Necklace Lengths
Here is a quick guide to necklace lengths.
- Collar
- Collar necklaces wrap snuggly around the neck and are often worn with V-necks. Collars are less than 14 inches.
- Choker
- Chokers fall around the base of the neck, just above the collar bone. Chokers are usually between 14 and 16 inches.
- Princess
- The Princess length is about 18 inches and is the most common length. The necklace hangs loosely, a couple inches below the neck. Often a pendant or gemstone is added.
- Matinee
- Matinee Necklaces are about 2 feet in length and are often worn in the business, professional and office environment.
- Opera
- Opera Necklaces are a little less than three feet long. Opera length necklaces can be worn as a single strand over a dress or blouse. Operas are often worn as a double strand and sometimes evan as a triple strand.
- Ropes
- Sometimes referred to as Ultra Long or Larriot, ropes are in the three to four foot range. Ropes are worn in a variety of ways, often with multiple strands, and sometimes even as a bracelet.
Necklace Care and Storage
And here are some tips to keep your necklaces forever young.
- Tangles
- Wrap ropes, lariats and other long necklaces around a small card or envelope to prevent tangles.
- Oils
- Wipe off hand oils before storing for extended periods.
- Sunlight
- Constant exposure to direct sunlight can cause gems to fade. So store necklaces out of the sun if you can.
- Scratches
- Reduce the risk of scratches by separating necklaces with a soft, cloth padding.<
- Oxidation
- Remove oxidation from tarnished necklaces by gently polishing with a mild soap or toothpaste.<
